Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT)
Strategies used to prevent the spread (transmission) of HIV from a mother to her child during pregnancy, labor and delivery, or by breastfeeding. Strategies include antiretroviral (ARV) prophylaxis for the mother during pregnancy and labor and delivery, scheduled cesarean delivery, ARV prophylaxis for the newborn infant, and shared decision-making on appropriate infant feeding methods with their health care provider.
